make your space Versatile

Easy Seat

The Project:

In a partnership with Filzfelt™: A leading felt manufacturing company based in Germany and the US, renowned for their premium German-milled 100% wool design felt. Available in an extensive palette of 63 vibrant colors and offered in five different thicknesses, their products have long been cherished for their versatility and quality.

In our collaboration with FilzFelt™, we embarked on a mission to redefine the boundaries of their exceptional materials. Traditionally utilized for decorative accents, soundproofing, or dividers, we sought to innovate and unlock new potentials for their range.

Our goal was simple yet ambitious: to introduce FilzFelt™ to novel applications, showcasing its adaptability and ushering in a fresh era of possibilities.

The Process:

Deep dives into the pain points of communal spaces unearthed a recurring theme: the dire need for adaptable, space-saving solutions. Armed with this invaluable insight, I embarked on a mission to design a versatile stool capable of seamlessly transitioning between seating and storage, providing a much-needed dose of flexibility.

As my initial sketches took form, I envisioned the felt serving a dual purpose: acting as both a hinge and a cushion. I began experimenting with patterns that could be easily folded flat for convenient storage. However, challenges soon emerged:

  1. Weight Bearing: Ensuring the stool could reliably support individuals of varying sizes.

  2. Durability: Addressing concerns regarding the wear and tear of critical components within the stool.

  3. Distinctive Design: Striving to create a pattern that would unmistakably signify its function as a stool.

Despite these obstacles, I remained steadfast in my pursuit of an innovative and functional solution, driven by the belief that every challenge presents an opportunity for creative breakthroughs.

The Final Build:

Upon completing the initial prototype, I found clarity in both the pattern and proportions. With this foundation in place, I embarked on the final build, carefully selecting materials that would embody both comfort and durability.

After meticulous consideration, I opted for 3mm felt for its ideal cushion-to-flexibility ratio, complemented by 3/16” birch plywood renowned for its sturdiness and rich hue. As the design progressed, I discovered the necessity for the middle intersection to form an X pattern, enhancing structural integrity to effectively support the weight of the user.
